Do your prices include VAT?
No they don’t -
You don’t list my job as one of your services, can you still do it?
You’ll appreciate that trying to list everything we can do would lead to an almost endless list. There are some things we definitely don’t do such as structural building works, but please be assured we will always be open with you and if we can’t do it we will say so. There may also be jobs we’ve never done before but are confident we can do, again we will be open with you and if you’d prefer not to use us on this basis we will understand. That said we are quite talented (even if we do say so ourselves!) and have a wealth of experience so, more often than not, we can do your job even if we haven’t listed it.
Do you charge for estimates?
No, estimates are absolutely free and with no obligation. We are likely to be able to estimate some jobs without a site visit, however these would be subject to verification on arrival at your premises. Other jobs/projects may necessitate us making an appointment with you to discuss further and view the site.
I’d prefer a quote to an estimate, can you do that?
Sometimes. Where possible we will provide a fixed price quotation however where there are unknowns (we always use the scenario of stripping wallpaper from walls the customer wants painted only to discover bare walls that resemble a map of the Himalayas!!) that may lead to unforeseen work. In these cases we will provide an estimate which we will revise and discuss with you should the need arise.
Do you have a minimum charge?
Yes, our current minimum charge is £30 .
My job will only take 10 minutes why should I pay for a full hour?
This is not unusual. Whilst we genuinely mean there is no job too small, a minimum charge allows us to keep our hourly rate at a reasonable level whilst covering our overheads, in turn meaning we can continue to offer our services. To ensure you get the best value for money we suggest you consider whether you have any other small jobs that could fill the hour.
What does your hourly rate include?
Besides the labour, our hourly rates include a reasonable (defined by us) amount of consumable items; this may include a few screws & wall plugs, a small amount of masking tape and general purpose filler for example. If we need to go and get a specific material/part we will need to charge for this.
Will you want any payment up front?
In 95% of cases no, indeed we would recommend you to be very cautious of any tradesman requiring payment up front. The only exception to this is if you require us to provide materials with a value in excess of £100, in which case we will ask for a 50% payment towards those materials. We will never ask you to pay anything up front for labour.
What payment methods do you accept?
We currently accept cash, personal cheque , bank transfer, debit and credit cards. For card transactions over £100 a 3% transaction fee will apply. Full and final payment is due on completion of the work.
Can you provide all materials?
Most of our customers use us as a labour only service, preferring to buy their own materials, but we will provide these for you. In this case we charge you the cost of materials/parts plus a 10% handling fee. Please note that until the materials have been paid for in full they remain the property of Hardwick Handyman & Daughters.
Will you clean up the work area?
We will respect your property and aim to leave it as clean as possible.
Can you dispose of any waste generated?
Yes we can but there would be a charge to you. We are only willing to do so as we are registered with the Environment Agency as a Waste Carrier. For your own peace of mind please be wary of trusting waste to anybody not registered as such; ultimately you remain responsible for the waste and would leave yourself open to prosecution (and any subsequent fine) should your waste be fly tipped for example.
What are your trading hours?
Due to the success the business has seen we have recently adopted full-
Monday to Thursday 8am to 9pm
Friday 8am to 7pm
Saturday 8am to 12pm
Saturday afternoon and Sunday can be accommodated but in most cases will attract a premium rate, please contact us for more details.
What’s the best way to get in touch with you?
We really don’t mind, whatever method suits you best. If we are unavailable please be assured we will get back to you as soon as possible, so do please leave a message. If we are unavailable for a prolonged period (such as holiday) you will receive a message saying when we return.
Do you only do work for home owners?
No, we are also happy to work for small businesses, landlords and letting agents.
Are you insured?
While we sincerely hope we never need it, for your peace of mind we have Public Liability Insurance for up to £2 million, covering injury or damages caused as a result of our work. The certificate can be viewed upon request.
Are you ‘Gas Safe’ registered or an electrical ‘Registered Competent Person’?
No, however we are still able to carry out many basic plumbing and electrical tasks. We will not take on any work which would be in breach of the latest regulations for gas or electric work, and will politely advise you to contact a specialist tradesman.
I can’t wait in all day, will you give me an appointment time?
Absolutely, we know how frustrating it is to wait all day for a parcel let alone a handyman! Whether we are coming to give you a free estimate or to start work we will agree a date and time with you. If circumstances beyond our control mean we will be more than 30 minutes late we will give you a courtesy call. Alternatively, by prior arrangement, we can call you when we are an agreed time away to enable you to get back to your property. In return for this flexibility, should you become unavailable for an appointment please ensure you give us as much notice as possible.
I’m nervous of having people I don’t know in my property, can I trust you?
You can, but we appreciate you only have our word for that! Ultimately, as a small business, our reputation is everything to us and we wouldn’t do anything to compromise that reputation. For your peace of mind Nick has been “Disclosure and Barring Service” (DBS) checked which has confirmed he has no convictions; DBS is the new version of the “Criminal Records Bureau” or “CRB” check.
What if I have concerns about your work?
In this unlikely event please don’t hesitate to tell us immediately; our reputation is everything to us and we would not want to leave a customer unhappy.
